Coach: George Mukhobe - Kampala, Uganda
While coordinating national efforts to spread the game in schools and raise the level of the country’s coaches, all as a volunteer, George continues to lead after-school practices in Nsambya. He does all this work as a volunteer. George continues to develop his coaching skills, but already has the most important ingredient: the trust and respect of his players.
Player: Lilian - Uganda
Lilian came to the Play Global baseball clinics in Gayaza, always early and always enthusiastic. She'd only been playing for less than a year, and had never used a baseball glove before. She learned fast, and coach Pat Doyle helped adjust her batting stance and timing in the batting cages. Lilian was excited to "hit the ball a long way." One of just a handful of girls on the field, Lilian said, "I like to play with the boys because they encourage me and give me strength that I can play the game."
Player: Kenneth - Uganda
Kenneth lives at the Mama Jane orphanage in Jinja, Uganda. At age 15, he was the captain of his local team and a skilled second baseman. Now 16, Kenneth appreciates the impact that baseball has had on his life. “Baseball taught me teamwork and how to overcome pressure,” he says. Kenneth likes to watch online videos of Major League Baseball players to help him become a better fielder. “I can give you more than a thousand reasons for playing baseball,” he explains, “ I just like learning new skills.”
