In South Africa, Play Global focuses on teaching young players and coaches in the Eastern Cape province. Play Global has been working in the Eastern Cape since 2017. Our focus is reaching at-risk kids, giving them a chance to learn teamwork and belong to a team.
Play Global introduces the game to children and trains coaches and PE teachers to lead ongoing baseball instruction.
"As I walked around town, people would stop me to say hello and share how they hoped that having baseball programs would help with crime issues, giving the kids a positive outlet and goals they'd be excited to work toward. It made sense that being part of a team could keep kids out of trouble." - Kevin Healy, Play Global coach
In 2021, Play Global launched a coach training program in South Africa. 144 coaches completed the program with 100% attendance. Thanks to a generous donation from Wilson Sporting Goods, participants received new youth baseball equipment for their teams. Play Global distributed 1,990 gloves, 6,000 baseballs, & 330 bats to South African youth programs & schools.
In 2022, we will continue this work throughout South Africa. Baseball equipment is expensive and hard to find for youth teams in South Africa. Most equipment on the field has been in constant use for more than ten years. With such a short supply, two teams often share bats and gloves during a game. The donation from Wilson has been a game-changer for kids ages 5-14 learning to play and love baseball.

Local connections through the Eagles Baseball Club and Billy Magengelele Baseball Revival Programme make this work possible.
